500 Miles in July?

Standard

So, some jerk on Google+ challenged everyone to ride 500 miles during the month of July.

500 miles is about twice as many as I’ve ever done in a single month, so it’s probably a fair bet that I won’t be able to accomplish such a feat.

I’m gonna try nonetheless, because I’ll probably ride more miles in failing to meet a goal than I will sitting on my ass planning bike rides that I never do.

There are 31 days in July, which means I need an average of 16.12 miles every day. It just so happens that one of my normal routes is 16.16 miles.

So, all I need to do is ride this loop every. single. day.

Of course, it’s friggan July, it’s roasting balls outside, and when I get home from work, I’m too tired to do much of anything. So, rides have to happen in the wee hours of the morning, before morning rush hour traffic, and before the evil yellow face scorches the sky.

Last time I rode the 16 mile loop, it took me 1.5 hours. So, in theory, I just need to set my alarm for 1.5 hours earlier than normal, and everything will be groovey.

We’ll see.

  1. Don’t forget, if you throw some longer rides in there you can bank yourself some rest days (and longer rides are fun anyway). I’m not accepting the challenge, as I have too many commitments already, but I wish you luck!

I didn’t even know about this challenge, but when I bought myself a “new” used bike at the beginning of the month, that was my goal. As of right now, I’m at 478.04. My ride home after work will put me at approximately 482.5. I have a 16 mile ride planned for tomorrow morning, and my ride into work will put me over the top. I’ve been away from biking for quite a few years, and am really enjoying my time back in the saddle. I’m on my bike between 5:30 and 6:00 just about every morning, and I ride anywhere between 15 and 25 miles. I plan on keeping at it until the New England weather forces me indoors. Hope everyone had fun, and remember to share the road. Let’s not give cycling a black eye.
