After I finished Into the Wild, I thought it might be nice to try to replicate Chris McCandless’ psychosis and read some of the stuff that inspired his grand adventure.
Barnes and Noble has a series of classic books you can pick up for cheap, so I got a copy of The Call of the Wild and White Fang for about $6.*
The Call of the Wild is a story about a dog. The story is told from the dog’s perspective. I though that was pretty cool. I don’t think I’ve ever read any other books where a dog is the main character.
Through a series of events, Buck (the dog) ends up in a mushing team pulling cargo all over Alaska during the Klondike gold rush. While he’s pulling the sled, he can hear wild wolves calling to him from the forest. He doesn’t much like being a sled dog, and would rather go hang out with the wolves.
It is a pretty violent story. There are people beating up dogs, dogs eating other dogs, and a dog tearing the living hell out of a group of mean-ass Eskimos.
It’s a fun book to read. The story kind of pulls you along, and I ended up reading the whole thing in two sittings.
I give The Call of the Wild 5 Jihadis out of 5
By the way, reading this book did not tempt me to move to Alaska to live in a bus. Maybe that will happen when I read White Fang.
*If you don’t want to spend $6, you can read it online for free.
Admit it Bone, with a main character named Buck (regardless of him being a dog), you had to think of me.
Buck, I think you should hook Orvis up to a sled and see how far he can pull me around the yard.
He might do alright if you dangle a bird in front of his face.
