6 months without meat

Standard

I stopped eating meat 6 months ago. I thought it was going to be all hard like quitting smoking, but it wasn’t.

It’s actually no big deal.

When people find out I’m vegetarian they say weird stuff like “but you still eat fish though, right?”

And then I say something like “No, fish are not vegetables.”

And then they look at me as if I’m the weirdo.

People are strange.

Hey, this is about a previous post of yours. I so you’re Trockenbrennstoff-Kocher and it looked really cool. If I understood it correctly you just light that white cube place it on the small dish with four legs, place the wind breaker around it and the pot inside. Did I get it right?
How strong is the flame? How does it compare to a regular backpacking stove like the MSR Pocket Rocket?
Does it come with the white cubes and wind breaker?
Where did you get it from?

Oh by the way love your blog.

good for you. i can’t imagine it, but then again I can. It’s just one of those habit energy things. and, no, fish are not veggies. good one, there.

  3. @Daniel,

Yes, that’s all there is to it. You light the fuel tablet, put your pot on the stand, and sit back and wait for boiling water.

I found the stove on Ebay by searching for “Esbit Wing Stove.” If you can’t find that particular stove, you can find the 3 ounce version at most outdoorsy stores.

I got the windscreen from backpackinglite.com, but you could probably make one out of aluminum foil just as easily.

Obviously, it’s a lot smaller and lighter (and cheaper!) than a pocket rocket. It’s a bit slower to boil water than a Pocket Rocket.

The pocket rocket depends on vapor pressure in the canister, so it will sometimes not work very well in the cold. Esbit doesn’t have this problem. Esbit works well in cold conditions.

You don’t have any way control the flame, so you can’t really do fancy cooking on it. I just boil water, for freeze-dried meals, so it works out well for me. I wouldn’t want to try to make pancakes on it, though.

The fuel cubes weigh half an ounce each, and will boil 2-3 cups of water in about 10 minutes. You can also break a cube in half and it’s enough to make a cup of tea or coffee. You can buy esbit fuel from campmor or amazon.

  4. I go on and off vegetarianism, but it never lasts long. I think it would be easier if I was single or if my wife wanted to be a vegetarian. But since my wife cooks most of my suppers, and she usually cooks with meat, I find it easier to just go along with it.

Anyway, I do like to play dumb about vegetarianism when speaking to vegetarian friends. I say things like, “That restaurant has great ham. It’s OK for a vegetarian to eat ham, right?” Hilarious every time!

Should you be lucky enough to be “reborn” as a zombie, what would that mean then for your vegetarianism? Are brains a vegetable?
